MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID FUNDING NEW
The NASC has created a £30,000 funding pot dedicated to mental health first aid training.
The fund gives NASC members the ability to claim up to £125 towards the cost of completing a mental health first aid course.
The £30,000 pot was set up as part of the NASC’s Head for Heights campaign, which is focused on breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting the importance of focusing on employee wellbeing in the workplace.
Recent activities include the creation of SG38:19, a free go-to guidance on mental health and wellbeing that provides employers with proactive steps they can take to improve wellbeing in the workplace as well as a host of useful links and services that they can signpost their employees to, and a mental health-focused toolbox talk.
Please complete the application below. There are currently three mental health first aid training courses covered by the £30,000 funding pot. These are offered by MHFA England, St John Ambulance and the British Safety Council.
Other mental health first aid courses may be eligible for funding. Please contact the NASC with the course details prior to submitting an application to ensure the course qualifies for financial support.
ARMED FORCES FUNDING
The NASC has created a £150,000 funding pot dedicated to the training and upskilling of former Armed Forces personnel.
Through this fund, NASC members can claim up to £1,000 towards the training of an ex-forces employee or employees.
This can be to cover the cost or partial cost of one course or several shorter duration courses and can be used in full on one individual or smaller payments on several individuals.
The money will be claimed by the NASC member in the same way as COTS/CPD funding with the member paying for the training then forwarding proof of training, CISRS card details (or copies of Certificates for non CISRS training) plus proof of payment.
Eligible candidates can either be in the process of leaving the Armed Forces or could have left in the past five years.
They can already be in the employ of an NASC member and be looking for funding for upskilling (Part2, Skills Test, Advanced, Inspection Supervisors, Design etc) alternatively they could have had other employment and are now looking to retrain to get into the scaffolding sector.
All CISRS courses are eligible. Application for non CISRS courses that are still relevant and have currency in the scaffolding sector e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH, first aid, SSSTS/SMSTS, estimating, design, HGV and so on would also be considered.
Applications are welcome for training undertaken on the date of the NASC AGM – Friday 22 November – onwards.
NASC President Lynn Way said: “We recognise the skill sets of ex-servicemen and women, which is why we’ve created this funding pot to provide an extra incentive to consider a career in scaffolding.
“We believe this fund will help them transition as seamlessly as possible from the Forces to the scaffolding industry, providing many individuals with a long-term career and the UK scaffolding industry with the workforce it needs to continue to thrive.”
The NASC has created a £50,000 funding pot to help its members bring new recruits into the scaffolding industry.
The training fund will enable NASC full contracting members to apply for £125 funding for each new employee that completes the CISRS Operatives Training Scheme (COTS).
This initiative, which will help bring 400 operatives into the industry, complements a similar CISRS CPD funding scheme launched by the NASC in 2017. To date, NASC members have claimed more than 500 payments of £125 to help cover the costs of their operatives undertaking mandatory CPD training – a total of £64K.
The new COTS funding initiative is the first scheme to be launched from a dedicated £500k training fund set up by the NASC in 2018 to assist its members with recruitment and training. A range of training initiatives are due to follow in the coming months.
David Mosley, NASC Training Director, said: “Through the £500k training fund, the NASC is giving tangible, bottom-line benefits to its members. This starts with the COTS funding scheme, which bookends existing NASC funding for CISRS CPD training.
“It means members will be able to apply for funding to help bring new people into the industry as well as defraying the costs of mandatory CPD training for their experienced operatives.
“This is just the beginning. It is envisaged that the £500k training fund will also provide members with the opportunity to apply for funding for a range of wider training, such as first aid and mental health training.
“It will also support ongoing NASC efforts to improve recruitment and careers opportunities in the scaffolding industry by producing a scaffolding careers website, working regionally with pre-employment training programmes, linking potential trainees with local approved providers and employers offering work experience placements and employment.
“The NASC has ringfenced a substantial sum of money in order to fund incoming NASC President Lynn Way’s initiative to work with the armed forces and provide career pathways for those coming out of the services”
The COTS funding scheme goes live on 1 July 2019. Members may also claim retrospectively for employees that have completed the COTS course and gained either the CISRS Labourer or Initial Trainee card since 1 January 2019. Members may claim funding for up to 10 operatives.

The NASC has set aside £30K to help subsidise the cost associated to the CISRS CPD/Refresher training requirement which was introduced on July 1 2017.
NASC members are able to apply for a payment of £125 for up to 10 of their employees that have renewed their CISRS Scaffolder or Advanced Scaffolder cards via the CISRS CPD process.
The operatives will need to have completed all requisite training and be in possession of a current valid CISRS card for the grade they are applying for in order to be eligible.
The £30K pot of funding will allow for 240 payments within this programme, with a further £20K ringfenced (160 payments) to provide additional support should the initiative prove to be a success.
