The legal requirement for rescue is specified in the ‘Work at Height Regulations 2005’ and require every employer in selecting work equipment for use in work at height to take account of the need for easy and timely evacuation and rescue in an emergency.

More than a quarter of the accidents reported each year by NASC members to enforcing authorities are associated with manual handling – the transporting or supporting of loads by hand, or by bodily force. A well-established document that proved to still be robust and valid. This revised guidance focuses on the management of manual handling and includes the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Manual handling assessment charts (MAC tool) – helps assess the risks posed by lifting, carrying and team manual handling activities. The MAC tool also assists the assessor to understand, interpret and categorise the level of risk of the various known risk factors associated with these activities. It also has a numerical and colour coding score system to highlight high-risk manual handling tasks. An example of Manual Handling Risk Assessment form is included. 16 pages.

This document gives scaffolding companies and clients guidance on The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR 2005) relating to safe means of access to and from scaffolding working platforms. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) outline that clients, principal designers, principal contractors, designers and contractors should consider what form of access may be needed at the planning stage. This should include any emergency escape routes that have been identified by the risk assessment, the preferred option for access / egress and the required number of access points. On larger projects powered passenger / goods hoists may be a safer option if available. Where passenger hoists are used, an additional means of access will be required for emergency purposes (e.g. in the event of a fire or mechanical failure). This update is significant in that key changes are ‘Ladder Safety’ and ‘Security’ of access onto scaffolds that differs to the earlier SG25:14. 16 pages
Employers are responsible for establishing an inspection regime for the inspection of fall protection equipment that is produced and implemented by a competent person. A Register of equipment should be compiled for use in managing the inspection regime.
