Meet Abby Kerr: Building Confidence and Mastering Her Craft

When Abby Kerr of Enigma Industrial Services first entered construction, she had not planned on a career in scaffolding.

Originally beginning her journey through a bricklaying course, Abby was exploring practical career opportunities and developing hands-on skills. During this experience, she was introduced to opportunities within scaffolding and decided to challenge herself by stepping into an industry she had not previously considered.

Abby joined Enigma-IS and began working in the yard, learning scaffold components and gaining a practical understanding of operations from the ground up. This early exposure gave her valuable insight into how projects are delivered and helped build a strong foundation of technical knowledge.

Like many people entering a new industry, Abby initially felt more comfortable remaining in familiar environments and was uncertain about continuing to progress. However, rather than limiting herself to what felt safe, she embraced opportunities to develop and gradually built the confidence to take the next step.

Recognising her potential and willingness to learn, Abby moved into an estimating traineeship. Since then, she has immersed herself in developing her technical and commercial understanding of the industry. Through shadowing internal and client pre-start meetings, learning estimating processes and gaining exposure to project planning and delivery, Abby has continued to expand both her capability and confidence.

What stands out most about Abby is her attitude towards learning. She actively asks questions, seeks feedback and views mistakes as opportunities to improve. Her growth has been demonstrated not only through her increasing technical knowledge but also through her confidence in engaging with colleagues, participating in meetings and supporting client conversations.

Abby contributes to her team through her positive approach, professionalism and commitment to continuous improvement. Her progression from operational learning into a more technical role reflects both her determination and the opportunities available within construction for those willing to embrace them.

Looking ahead, Abby speaks passionately about her ambition to become a master of her craft. Her focus is not simply on progression through job titles but on building deep expertise and becoming recognised for the quality of her work and understanding of the industry.

Abby’s story demonstrates that careers in construction are not always linear and that with curiosity, resilience and the right support, unexpected opportunities can become long-term careers.
