Teacher Tour in Ashford opens doors to careers advisers

NASC member Browne's Scaffolding hosted a NASC Teacher Tour at its Ashford base in Kent today, welcoming a group of careers advisers and employability coaches for a first-hand look at the industry.

The day gave attendees a realistic insight into scaffolding, covering health and safety requirements, entry pathways and the progression routes available once someone joins the trade. Browne's also took the group on a tour of the yard and ran two demonstrations, one on system scaffolding and one on tube and fitting, so attendees could see the difference for themselves.

The value of that kind of access showed in the feedback. One attendee said she had not understood scaffolding as a career and so had not been promoting it. Now that she knows what the opportunities are and how inclusive the industry can be, she will be including it in her regular careers conversations.

That is exactly what Teacher Tours are for. The people advising school leavers, jobseekers and career changers can only recommend what they understand, and most have never been inside a scaffolding yard.
