NASC team delivers Health & Safety Workshop
Yesterday (Tuesday 27th January 2026) saw two members of NASC’s Technical department visit Lee Marley Group to present a Health and Safety Enrichment Workshop.
Steve Kearney (Health and Safety Manager) and Adam Wells (Safety, Health & Technical Executive), delivered a presentation and workshop to a group of Lee Marley scaffolding apprentices, ranging from some newly registered to those awaiting their EPA (End Point Assessment).
The pair gave an informative presentation covering the importance of Health & Safety in the scaffolding industry and the role of NASC, as well as sharing some of their experiences from their time in the industry. Discussing their careers with the apprentices, they talked about how they got started in scaffolding, how their careers took unexpected twists and turns, how perceptions towards progression within the industry are changing, and how they arrived at their roles within Health & Safety at NASC.
The session set out to:
- Explore the huge variety of opportunities and pathways within the industry.
- Discuss the importance of Health & Safety and its evolution.
- Explain the benefits of NASC membership and how compliance with its guidance is important, as well as how that can impact you as an employee.
The presentation was followed by an activity during which the apprentices were provided with a TG20 Compliance Sheet, a loading list and a risk assessment template. The attendees split into groups and were tasked with planning out the project, considering the scope of the scaffold, the materials required and the risks that come with carrying out the work.
This allowed the groups to have conversations about how they would identify hazards and risks at work, who they can affect and what they could do to mitigate them. The activity highlighted the importance of forward planning and the role Health & Safety plays during it, while also providing a deeper understanding of the tasks that need to be undertaken by their supervisors and managers to allow them, the next generation of scaffolders, to do their jobs competently and safely.
Rebekah Jardine (NASC Careers Executive) was also at the event, “This session was a huge success and will hopefully be the first of many similar activities that we can provide to our members. We can also help them to deliver these kinds of sessions themselves to new recruits as part of a richer, more engaging induction process.”
Thanks to Sara Calvo and Gill Peltier at Lee Marley Group for their help organising the event. If you would like to organise a similar event, contact [email protected]
