National Careers Week and Scottish Apprenticeship Week
As we get ready for National Careers Week 2026 and Scottish Apprenticeship Week, both of which are celebrated next week (Monday 2 March to Friday 6 March 2026), NASC will be showcasing the incredible work our members are doing to raise the profile of the sector and inspire the next generation to consider a career in scaffolding and access.
Inside LTC Group87
Today, we’re spotlighting LTC Group87 and their Managing Director, Mike Burr, who demonstrates how scaffolding offers not just early entry into employment, but genuine long-term career progression, within and beyond our industry.
LTC Group87 is a full-service scaffolding and powered access group, that also runs an in-house training facility. Recent projects have included work for Torbay Council
As LTC approaches 40 years in business, the ethos set by the founder and current chairman, Trevor Chinn, has always been clear. it is a firm rooted in employee opportunity. Apprenticeships, training, progression, promotion and alternative career pathways are not add-ons at LTC Group87, they are the cornerstone of the group’s mission.
Burr himself joined the firm as a Surveyor and progressed through a series of roles, including a spell as Finance Director to later become Managing Director. As Burr explains: “We believe the growth and stability of our business is underpinned by our people and the opportunities provided to them.”
And that commitment to offering development opportunities is evident across the group. Like Burr, all his fellow directors have been promoted internally. The Scaffold Managing Director started as a Divisional Manager, the Training Managing Director as a Scaffold Contracts Manager, and the Powered Access Managing Director as a Mechanic. And former scaffold apprentices now hold roles such as Head of Commercial as well as becoming contracts managers, training instructors, surveyors and estimators.
And others who trained with the group have taken their skills into other environments, and are now working with organisations as diverse as Princess Yachts, Plymouth Argyle Football Club and Denholm Industrial Services. Others still have travelled to work in Australia, offshore or contributing to major projects like Hinkley Point.
Continuing professional development
Some have also gone on to launch their own successful businesses or progressed into senior leadership roles elsewhere, with LTC proud to have supported those journeys. But progression isn’t only about promotion or changing career. Personal development within existing roles is equally important. Through internal and external training, enhancement of soft skills and creating an environment where individuals can flourish, LTC ensures opportunity exists at every level. As a training provider, LTC also sees first-hand the outstanding work many employers are doing to develop and progress their teams.
Operating predominantly within construction, the continued support of organisations such as CISRS, NASC and CITB — alongside valued clients — has been instrumental in enabling these opportunities and sustaining long-term success.
Scaffolding is more than a job, it’s a platform for opportunity.
